Lyric Syllable Counter — Count Syllables Line by Line

Paste your lyrics and get the syllable count of every line — with the lines that sing smoothly flagged green and the tongue-twisters flagged red. Hit Count syllables to run it. Everything happens in your browser: nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

Heuristic English syllable counting with a hand-tuned exception list — built for lyric lines, not dictionary entries.

Line-by-line counts will appear here. Paste lyrics and hit “Count syllables”, or try “Load example”.

🛠️How it works

  • One line = one musical phrase. Paste your lyric one line per bar or phrase, hit Count syllables, and each line gets a count badge plus a dot-meter showing where it sits.
  • Green means singable (4–9 syllables) — a comfortable mouthful for most melodies. Amber (10–12) needs a melody that moves; red (under 4 or over 12) will feel cramped or rushed in almost any setting.
  • Look at the shape, not just the number. Two lines of 7 sing like a matched pair; lines of 6, 7, 8, 6 give a verse a natural rise and fall.

📖Why syllables decide whether a line sings

Lyrics aren’t read — they’re sung to a fixed number of notes. A line with too many syllables forces the melody to cram them in; too few leaves dead air you have to hold with a long note. That’s why writers count: not for pedantry, but because the count tells you which line to fix before you write the melody.

Pop verses live around 6–8 syllables, choruses often match the verse or go slightly tighter, and rap runs much denser — that’s a different craft, which is why we built a separate Rap Cadence Checker for bars.

🔧When a line is too long

  • Cut filler words first: just, really, very, all of the, the fact that. They pad count without adding feeling.
  • Contract deliberately: I am going to → I’m gonna saves three syllables and sounds more sung anyway.
  • If a line is too short, don’t pad — stretch a vowel in the melody, or split the line and let the music breathe.
  • Then regenerate: when the shape is right, run it next to a draft from the lyric generators and compare which version you’d actually sing.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

Do you store the lyrics I paste?

No. The counter runs entirely in your browser — your text never leaves the page and nothing is saved.

How accurate is the counting?

It’s a heuristic with a hand-tuned exception list, tuned for lyric words. Straightforward words are near-perfect; genuinely contested ones (is fire one syllable or two? singers disagree) follow the most common sung pronunciation. Treat it as a fast first pass, not a dictionary.

Why does my line of ten syllables get flagged amber when my song sings fine?

Because the zone is generic: a slow ballad can comfortably carry twelve syllables, a fast pop-punk verse less than six. The colors are a starting point — the dot-meter is there to help you compare lines against each other, which matters more than any absolute rule.

Does it work for Spanish or other languages?

English only here — but we built a dedicated rule-based Spanish Syllable Checker with real silabeo, since Spanish syllable division follows consistent rules.
