Singability Checker — Will Your Lyrics Be Easy to Sing?

A line can read beautifully and still be a mouthful to sing. Paste your lyrics and the checker scores every line the way a session singer would feel it — open vowels to land on, consonant clusters that trip the tongue, ending sounds that choke a held note. It runs on click, entirely in your browser.

Heuristics tuned for pop / rock / R&B melodies — not an opera aria audit. Your singer’s ear has the final word.

Your results appear here. Paste lyrics on the left and hit “Check singability”, or try “Load example”.

🛠️How it works

🫦Consonant clusters — three or more consonants in a row inside a word (glimpsed, strength, sixths) get flagged. They read fine but trip a tongue at tempo.
📏Long words — two or more 4-syllable words in one line is a rushing or melisma risk; the checker names them.
🎯Line endings — an open vowel (go, far) or sustainable consonant (n, m, r) carries a held note; a stop (t, k, p) or sibilant (s) clips it dead.
🔆Open-vowel ratio — lines built on a/o vowels project; a line with almost none will sound muted when the melody opens up.

Each line gets a 0–100 score from these factors, plus a note per issue. The header score is the average.

📖Why lines fail on the mic

Writing and singing pull in opposite directions. Writing rewards density — specific images, long precise words. Singing rewards air: open vowels to sustain, room between consonants, endings that don’t stop the phrase like a door. Great melody writers instinctively put the openest vowels on the highest notes and save the consonant-heavy words for quick, low passages.

None of this means a flagged line is wrong. A stop consonant at the end of the final line of a chorus can be exactly the punctuation the song needs. What matters is that the choice is yours.

🔧What to do with the result

  • Fix the line you’ll belt. Endings matter most where the melody holds — usually the last line of the chorus. Save your openest vowel for it.
  • Thin clusters by cutting, not rephrasing. glimpsed → saw loses meaning; the glimpse I caught keeps it and adds air.
  • Then check the note count. Pair with the Lyric Syllable Counter — a singable line still needs syllables that fit the melody’s pockets.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

Do you store the lyrics I paste?

No. Everything runs in your browser with JavaScript — your text never leaves the page, and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

My line scored badly but I can sing it fine.

Then sing it fine — the score weighs risk factors, not talent.Clusters and closed endings are real friction points, but phrasing, ad-libs and melody choice can absorb all of them. The tool tells you where friction lives, not what’s allowed.

Does it work for rap verses?

Partially. Rap is spoken-leaning, so clusters matter less and cadence matters more — you’ll get better guidance from the Rap Cadence Checker for bars, and this tool for sung hooks.

Why do open vowels matter so much?

On a sustained note, the vowel is the sound — consonants only attack and release it. A/o vowels resonate most easily at volume, which is why anthems end on go, glow and alone, not on strict or gasp.
