Word Echo Finder — Find the Words That Keep Repeating in Your Lyrics

Every songwriter has echo words — the ones that keep sneaking back into the draft. Paste your lyrics and the finder counts every content word, flags the repeats, and highlights each occurrence in place. It runs on click, entirely in your browser.

Function words (the, and, I, you…) are counted but not flagged — nobody rewrites a line over “the”. Interjections like oh/yeah are grouped separately.

Your results appear here. Paste lyrics on the left and hit “Find the echoes”, or try “Load example”.

🛠️How it works

  • Paste and click. The finder tokenizes every word, lowercases and folds curly apostrophes, then counts each content word across the whole section.
  • Repeats get flagged. Any content word appearing 2+ times becomes a chip with its count, and every occurrence is highlighted in place so you can see where it clusters.
  • Function words stay quiet. The, and, I, you and friends are counted but never flagged — repetition of grammar words is normal. Interjections like oh / yeah get their own quiet summary line.

📖Why echoes matter

Repetition is not a sin — hooks repeat on purpose, and a word that returns across sections can be the thread that holds a song together. The problem is accidental echoing: when heart shows up four times because it was the first rhyme you found, not because the song needs it four times. Listeners feel that as flatness long before they can name it.

The fix is usually one pass, not a rewrite: keep the echoes that carry meaning (usually in the hook), and swap the ones doing local rhyme duty in the verses for something more specific.

🔧What to do with the result

  • Decide per word, not per count. A repeated home in a song about leaving home is structure. A repeated eyes across four unrelated lines is an accident.
  • Check where it clusters. If all instances sit in the chorus, that’s design. If they scatter across verse lines, that’s drift.
  • Then re-check flow and rhyme. Pair with the Rhyme Scheme Mapper to make sure your replacements don’t break the scheme.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

Do you store the lyrics I paste?

No. Everything runs in your browser with JavaScript — your text never leaves the page, and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Why isn’t a word I repeated being flagged?

Common function words (the, and, I, you, was…) are deliberately excluded — flagging them would bury the signal. If a content word truly repeats and isn’t flagged, it’s likely the first occurrence was counted under a different form ( plurals and verb endings count as different words).

Does it catch different forms, like run/running?

Not yet — the finder matches exact words, so run and running count separately. That’s intentional: near-echoes are often a deliberate variation rather than an accident.

Should the chorus count as an echo of itself?

This tool looks at exactly what you paste. If you paste verse + chorus together, the chorus words will show up as repeats — that’s usually fine. For verse-only checks, paste just the verse.
